#Articles : Reasons Why You Must Learn To Apologize

I was speaking with a friend on this issue of Apologies and it got me to write this post.

You see, we’ve been made to think and understand that only wrong people apologize for the wrong that they have done.

But I’m of a different opinion.

Wanna hear it? Then keep on reading.

Apologies do not only apply to the set of people mentioned above. As a matter of fact, some people have a degree in defending their actions whether right or wrong.

Listen to me.

“You don’t apologize because you’re wrong or you can’t prove a point. You Apologize because you are STRONG” (Gladness Gold 2018)

Now, saying sorry doesn’t necessarily depict that you’re sorry. As a matter of fact, many people say it and repeat their actions.

While an apology can be a regretful acknowledgement of a wrong action, An Apology can also be a weapon used to stop raging wars at the moment.

You don’t need to be wrong to apologize. When you see that you’re right, but the wrong party ain’t willing to apologize, you do.

It shows a High level of Maturity and Wisdom.

Remember that

“You don’t apologize because you’re wrong or you can’t prove a point. You Apologize because you are STRONG” (Gladness Gold 2018)

What Makes a Good Apology?

A multitude of studies have been conducted to understand what makes a well-rounded apology. There is no single, definitive definition, but according to Guy Winch, Ph.D, a successful apology should contain five key elements:

1 A clear ‘I’m sorry’ statement. 2 An expression of regret for what happened.

3 An acknowledgment that social norms or expectations were violated. 4 An empathy statement acknowledging the full impact of our actions on the other person.

5 A request for forgiveness. This definition is rather comprehensive, but it excludes three important elements.

A sincere apology should propose specific solutions to fix the wrongdoing. Additionally, a statement should be delivered as soon as possible after the transgression. The timeliness suggests that the person quickly realized the harm of their actions and felt remorse. Timeliness is especially important to public apologies because taking a long time to apologize can give the impression the statement is being crafted to perfection by a PR team, which does not indicate sincere remorse on behalf of the offending party. It should also be noted that it is important to exclude conditional statements. Conditional statements, like “I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings,” suggest a lack of willingness to take responsibility for transgressions.
