 Singing

Remix or Merix: The need to sing rightly not blindly.

My post today is born out of my recent discoveries of some quite popular songs, (songs that i have known since i could count 123 or recite ABC) that have turned out to be just so wrong from what the composer wrote and sang (interesting i must add but worrying).

So i was in church yesterday and service was really impactful from the time i stepped in to the church till the very end (went a little late today. My bad). Infact the high-point of the service was the Exhortation. In the church where i worship (i don’t preach church, but if you want to know,… You can ask) by dropping your question in the comment box), this month is observed as our loyalty month (to check our commitment to God) and usually there is an exchange of pulpit(that is resident pastors are asked to minister in another branch, parish, zone, district, province).

As God would have it, the pastor that came to the church where i worship happened to be the composer of a very popular song which He gladly used to Kickoff His ministration. Imagine my surprise when what He sang was just so different (especially in meaning) to what was the popular thing. The song (the merix- the twisted version)is

Me i no go suffer

I no go beg for bread

Me i no go suffer

I no go beg for bread.

God of miracle

Na my papa o

God of miracle

Na my papa o

Now, as melodious as the song is, as danceable as it is, my problem with it since i learnt a part of the scriptures (Matt 16:21-25, 20:20-23) has always been Who Tell You Say You No Go Suffer? Suffering is synonymous with the cross and the cross is the central message of the Gospel of Christ. Suffering is a must for every Christian life. If Jesus suffered and said we will also drink of the same cup, what are we now singing? The song doesn’t conform to scriptures.
The original version of the song (You will be amazed if you meditate on it, the whole new meaning of the song and the power of hope it carries)
Even if i suffer

I no go beg for bread

Even if i suffer

I no go beg for bread

God of Miracles

Na my papa o

God of Miracles

Na my papa o

Wow. Alot are going through sufferings right now, and what they need is a song like this to lift their spirit-man up. (to put a balance, suffering is necessary but there is also a provision to live Victoriously if we follow through with God. David said “i have been young, and now am old; yet, i have never seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. Psalm 37:25. Conforms to scriptures? Yea it sure does now). God will never forsake the righteous man even in His sufferings. He is with us always, even to the end of the world. We should be of Good cheer.
Music ministers there is a need for us to brace up. We really need to put a lot of effort into scrutinizing the songs that we sing in order to ensure that we sing correctly. We need to pay attention to getting the correct lyrics of songs and their other components, as well as ensure they are sung correctly. I see God helping us.

Have a blessed week friends
