5 ways to Lead A Simple Life.

Let me begin by listing three definitions of simplicity culled from different English dictionaries.

  1. Simplicity is the quality or condition of being easy to understand or do.
  2. Simplicity is the condition or quality of being plane or uncomplicated in form or design.
  3. Simplicity speaks to freedom from guile, complexity, intricacy, absence of luxury, pretentiousness.

Once simplicity is missing, it takes the entire condition and makes it complex. William James said and I quote in verbatim;

“the art of being wise is the art of knowing what to overlook. Don’t make your life complicated by looking at everything. Live each day at a time”.

Mother Theresa also said ” The more you have, the more you are occupied; The less you have, the more free you are”.

The analogy of this quote make us understand that when you didn’t have as much, you were never bothered. You simply lived life at your own level.

  • Do one Thing at a Time : Practice living one day at a time; give yourself–your thoughts, your conversation, your energies, every part of you–to the day at hand. Develop an ability to give yourself to what you are doing. You will sense an awareness enabling you to enjoy the current activity, instead of going through each day in a blur of activity and confusing thoughts which leave you drained and exhausted. The apostle Paul tells us in Philippians 4:6 to be anxious for nothing. Anxious people are always trying to live ahead of where they currently are. They spend today trying to figure out tomorrow and the result is the loss of simplicity. The key to doing one thing at a time is simplicity; and one of the key to simplicity is realizing that quality is far superior to quantity.

  • Be Satisfied with what You Have: Someone once said and I quote “Contentment is not the fulfilment of what you want but the realization of how much you already have”. Let your character or moral disposition be free from love of money [including greed, avarice, lust, and craving for earthly possessions] and be satisfied with your present [circumstances and with what you have]; for He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you.–Hebrews 13:5 Paul states in Philippians 4:11 that he learned how to be content no matter what his circumstances were.

  • I always tell people this; your harvest will come, don’t force the rain to fall when it’s the season of the sun. Everything good will happen in their own time. Never force your miracle, wait for it, it will surely come. The needs and wants of people these days is on the high rise. Now people tend to crave for material things more and more, yet they don’t enjoy what they already possess. A simple person is a satisfied person; they don’t don’t crave more of anything, but they do thoroughly enjoy what they have. Therefore, make a decision to begin thoroughly enjoying what you have and trust God that more will come in due time. When you’re contented with what you have, with who you are, you won’t have the need to contend for things or with people.

  • Keep God First then Count on God: Henry Alford said “Man’s life is of God not of his goods however abundant they may be. Bishop David Oyedepo always say ” if you make God your center of attention, He will make you the center of attraction in the midst of men“. Those who out God first never come last in life. Putting God first is the same as counting on Him. It’s wise to count on Him and not the things you count. Prov. 3:5-6; talks about trusting in God with all your heart, acknowledging Him in all your ways, and doing so will commit God into directing your paths. No matter the things you count in this life and no matter how awesome they are. If you don’t have the wisdom to count on God, to put God first you might lose the things you count. Don’t forget this, when you put things first before God or count things without counting on God, you lose the things, but when you count on God, you lose the things, but when you count on God without counting on things, you gain more valuable and precious things. If you seek after things you will miss God; but if you seek God first you’ll have all things.

  • Live to Glorify God: “Most men seem to live to themselves, without much regard to the glory of God, or the good of their fellow-creatures.” –David Brainard. In Isaiah 43:7 we were made to understand that as God’s people, we were created to Bring Him glory. It’s important to show God glory through your life, not just through your words or spiritual acts. Start seeing ordinary daily routines as something done for God, not something to check off your list so you can search for God amidst things you think are holy. When we begin seeing each activity as something done unto the Lord and for His glory, life becomes simple. What makes life simple is having an intimate relationship with Christ; following His principles, loving Him for who He is and not just for what He can do for us–these things keep life smooth and uncomplicated. Begin to see life as one whole, not something with many divided parts, some of which are suitable for God and others which are not. If any part of my life is not suitable for the Lord, then it is not suitable for me either and should be cut out. Start removing those parts of your life you keep around only for yourself so you will have more room for the parts that glorify and honor God. Let them grow and flourish and watch how easy it becomes.

  • Don’t Worry about Tomorrow: “Any concern too small to be turned into a prayer is too small to be made into a burden.”–CORRIE TENBOOM So do not worry or be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will have worries and anxieties of its own. Sufficient for each day is its own trouble.–Matthew 6:34 Also in Matthew 6:25-31, Jesus teaches us not to worry about tomorrow but encourages us to believe that if God takes care of the birds and the flowers, surely, He will take care of us. Each day contains all we can handle–we don’t need to be concerned about more than today. When we think about the future with all of its unanswered questions and threatening circumstances, we can feel quite overwhelmed. Our heavenly Father does not give us an extra supply of grace to think on tomorrow’s problems and still maintain our peace of mind and joy. To do so would encourage us to worry, to be anxious and to care about concerns that aren’t necessarily ready for our attention. Trying to live tomorrow today complicates life. It’s impossible to deal with tomorrow’s problems today. Put your trust in God and allow yourself to enjoy the simple life.
