Shad Forsythe to snub AC Milan interest with Darren Burgess set to leave Arsenal – Football.London

Arsenal’s director of high performance Darren Burgess is set to leave as part of an overhaul of the high performance department that will see Shad Forsythe reject the lure of AC Milan to remain at the Gunners.

Burgess joined Arsenal amid much fanfare two years ago and set about a process of overhauling a medical, physical and fitness department that had fallen behind top clubs in the preceding seasons. That process has now come to an early end, football.london understands, with the 45-year-old’s exit having been confirmed in the aftermath of the Gunners’ Europa League final defeat to Chelsea.

It is the latest in a string of major departures from Arsenal in the past 12 months, in which chief executive Ivan Gazidis, head of recruitment Sven Mislintat, first team video scout Ben Wrigglesworth and a string of Arsene Wenger’s former staff have left the club.

The Australian, who had worked at Liverpool between 2010 and 2012, had made major staffing changes to the performance department, recruiting new physios such as Paulo Barreira and data scientist Mikhail Zhilkin. He had also attempted to change the culture within a medical department in which players had become overly dependent on individual physiotherapists.

Wenger had “handpicked” Burgess to join the club in the summer of 2017 and his addition was viewed as a major coup by Arsenal. However the relationship between the director and the Gunners will come to an early end, a year before the expiration of his contract.

Burgess had previously indicated that he hoped to sign extended terms with Arsenal.

Significantly Burgess will not be followed out of the London Colney exit by Shad Forsythe, who had been coveted by AC Milan. Gazidis, former Arsenal CEO and now leading the Italian side, had hoped to bring the American to his new club but the 46-year-old is expected to remain in London.

Indeed Forsythe is likely to take control of the department on at least a temporary basis whilst Arsenal consider how or whether to restructure the department.

Burgess already has an advisory role with Australian club Southern Expansion.
